of Dance: Ten Masterworks of Modernity

FISHER PAC

AART

This course considers the work of dance history as an archeological project;  digging deep into ten diverse masterworks through which the history of western theatrical dance will emerge in all its aesthetic, cultural, and philosophical complexity.  Ranging from Nijinsky’s Rite of Spring to the Swing Dance phenomenon of the Harlem Renaissance; from Wigman’s Witch Dance to Balanchine’s Agon, the class will reckon with the historic resonances of each work through weekly reading assignments, video observation, and in class discussions and writing prompts.  These activities will not only deepen our interpretation of the work at hand but also serve to facilitate the development of individual research papers and in class student presentations.

Dance Technique Courses:

Intensive technique studies are essential to a serious dance student’s training. Intending and current dance majors must register for two credits of dance technique each semester of their four years at Bard.
