credits An experiential survey course, offering an
examination of the great American music and dance traditions. Students explore, for example, how mountain
ballads joined with gospel music and blues to become Bluegrass, and how English
miners’ wooden soled shoe dances joined with Native American and African styles
to become “Appalachian clogging.” We will examine how Irish reels become
hoedowns, how tap dancing was born, and learn to recognize the basic difference
between the song and dance styles of the Eastern Woodlands and Plains Native
Americans. Protest songs from revolutionary times will be followed through the
great labor, civil rights, women’s movements and beyond. Students will join
their own singing, dancing and playing music to these traditional songs and
dances, studying the unifying forces of music and dance in different American
communities throughout history. Open to students with some experience in
dancing, singing, or playing an instrument. (Enrollment limited to 20.)

This course is designed as an anatomy class for dancers,
prospective dance teachers, and anyone interested in the application of anatomy
to dance technique. Scientific information is limited to a need to know basis,
focusing on the musculoskeletal system, with immediate transfer of lecture
material to dance-movement concepts. This course will present a scientific basis
for the human body that will aid in the technical and aesthetic growth of dance
performance. In addition to the weekly lecture, the class will make frequent
visits to the dance studio, in which students will be guided in applying
scientific concepts to movement.
DAN 103- Introduction to Dance (One credit each) Classes in modern dance and ballet intended
for the beginner; no previous dance experience necessary. Open to all
students. New students with previous dance experience should speak with the

Two credits. The Dance Program aims to
prepare students, in as versatile a way as possible, to understand and practice
the art of dance and performance. To this end, the Program presents four
productions that are open to the Bard community and the public. Moderation and
Senior Project work is prepared for and performed in these four productions.
Dance Composition aims to introduce principles and theories about choreography
in a studio setting. Dance Workshop in
Performance and Production creates and sustains our community of performers and
collaborators, on stage and behind the scenes. All members of the
community are welcome to visit or participate in Dance Workshop, and may earn
one credit by registering in a tutorial with Professor Churchill. Dance
Composition is open to non-majors and second semester First-Year students with
permission of the instructor. Dance Composition/Dance Workshop in
Performance and Production are required of all dance majors, and all students
enrolled in Dance Composition must attend Dance Workshop. Sophomore intending dance majors register
for both sections of 217 to earn four credits; Juniors register for 317 to earn
two credits.
