In this
writing-intensive course, we will sharpen our skills at writing and revising
academic essays. By breaking down the
writing process into its component parts, considering what each step needs in
order to be useful, and anticipating the experience of a reader, this class
allows students to hone their skills at producing successful academic
writing. Along the way, we’ll consider
such things as question framing, using outside sources, editing, and other
skills necessary to write effectively.
This semester, we will read and write about the relationship between
language and identity. Students should
expect to produce 25 pages of finished writing, through various assignments
with multiple revisions.

This
course introduces students to the architectural history of the modern era,
including styles and movements, major architects and, to a limited degree, methodologies.
The course will
pay particular attention to the way in which architects have responded to, and
participated in, formal and aesthetic developments in other arts as well as
broader technological, economic, and social-political transformations. Students will leave the class
with a thorough knowledge of the most important stylistic and engineering
developments of the 19th and 20th centuries, will have mastered the basic
vocabulary of architecture and building, and will have begun to develop their
writing skills in relation to not only architectural history, but also visual
analysis generally. Course grades will be based on attendance and
participation, one short written assignment on visual analysis of architecture,
a midterm and a final exam. Open to all students.

This
course will explore major currents in European and American art and architecture
from the twentieth century. The class is intended to help students acquire a
knowledge of major artistic movements and works of this century, together with
an awareness of the cultural and social contexts in which they emerged.
Additionally, students will develop the analytical and visual skills necessary
to interpret and understand the great diversity of works and critical positions
that constitute the history of twentieth-century art, as well as the written
skills necessary to communicate their own ideas and interpretations of these
works. Course
grades will be based on attendance and participation, three written assignments
(which require some research skills), a midterm and a final exam. Open to all students, with
preference given to students who have had prior art history coursework.
