The first part of a two-semester sequence
introducing the fundamentals of the Japanese language. Students will
systematically develop their abilities in the four primary skills: listening,
speaking, writing and reading. Course work will consist of extensive study of
basic grammar, language lab work, conversation practice, and simple composition
exercises.

characters and introduces more complex grammatical patterns and expressions

This course offers a general introduction to
Japanese literature from the late-nineteenth century to the present day.
Students will have the opportunity to learn about some of Japan’s most highly
recognized writers, literary movements, and artistic trends. The aim of the
course is to achieve familiarity with literature in Japan as it has evolved
over the past 150 years, and also to address questions specific to literature
as an artistic genre and as a mode of cultural expression. Topics covered
include late-Meiji melodrama, confessional fiction, literary modernism, women's
writing, colonialism, war and memory, social discrimination, and popular
literature. Conducted in English; no knowledge of Japanese is required.

and formal oral presentations (happyō). Materials include newspaper articles,
handwritten letters, popular songs, haiku, film, and literature, as well as
other material based on student interest. Prerequisite: Japanese 301 or
equivalent.
