A close reading of Plato's account of the trial and
death of Socrates and its immediate aftermath among his associates (the
dialogues Euthyphro, Apology, Crito, and Phaedo). We
read portions of each dialogue in Greek, at least one dialogue in Greek
completely, and all four dialogues in English. Our goals are (1) to solidify
knowledge of vocabulary, morphology, and syntax; (2) to gain greater fluency in
reading Greek prose; and (3) to explore the philosophical, literary, and social
issues raised by this foundational event in Western culture by sampling
critical approaches to the study of the language and its literature. (201 and
301 meet together.) Prerequisite:
successful completion of Greek 102, or permission of instructor.
