Intensive technique studies are essential to a serious dance student’s training. Intending and current dance majors must register for four credits of dance technique each semester of their four years at Bard. Students are welcome to watch classes currently being offered to learn about the different modern dance styles/methods of teaching and the ballet training offered.

2 credits  In the past few years, due in part to the dissemination and popularity of the likes of Ladysmith Black Mombazo, Riverdance, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Paco De Lucia, and Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares, it has become evident in the public eye that the tremendous wealth and variety of world music and dance forms is truly staggering. Now, more than ever, a familiarity with the structures and styles of ethnic music and dance is essential for a well rounded attitude towards, and understanding of, performance forms in general. Since exposure as passive spectator can offer only partial impressions of these subtle styles, students will be given opportunities to participate physically in various world music and dance forms through movement, vocalization, drumming, and creative work. Music and dance of the Balkans, Central Asians, Native Americans, Irish, North Africans, Andeans and others will be highlighted in the course. Functional modalities, (i.e. religious celebrations, entertainment, status, courtship, work songs, chanteys, lullabies, etc.) will be investigated. Guest performers of various ethnic styles will participate. Students will be encouraged to use their own skills and bring in musical instruments, and will be expected to do independent projects in folklore, as well as creative work in collaboration with others.

Analysis of Arts

Physics of Dance is geared toward dancers interested in deepening their understanding of the art form through an investigation into the governing laws of physics.  All class meetings will be held in the dance studio so we can move back and forth between theory and application.  The required text is “Physics and the Art of Dance” by Kenneth Laws.  Grading will be based on class participation, quizzes, outside research projects with in-class presentations, and midterm and final exams.  Prerequisites: successful Q-test and intermediate level dance experience.

Dance Composition / Dance Workshop in Performance and Production

Two credits. The Dance Program aims to prepare students, in as versatile a way as possible, to understand and practice the art of dance and performance. To this end, the Program presents four productions that are open to the Bard community and the public. Moderation and Senior Project work is prepared for and performed in these four productions. Dance Composition aims to introduce principles and theories about choreography in a studio setting.  Dance Workshop in Performance and Production creates and sustains our community of performers and collaborators, on stage and behind the scenes.

All members of the community are welcome to visit or participate in Dance Workshop, and may earn one credit by registering in a tutorial with Professor Churchill. Dance Composition is open to non-majors and second semester First-Year students with permission of the instructor.  Dance Composition/Dance Workshop in Performance and Production are required of all dance majors, and all students enrolled in Dance Composition must attend Dance Workshop. Sophomore intending dance majors register for both sections of 217 to earn four credits; Juniors register for 317 to earn two credits.
