This is a course in comparative religions, aiming at gaining perspective on religion through comparison and contrast: what do religions have in common, where do they differ, and how can we make sense of the points in common and in conflict? The focus is on comparison of theology of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and of law in Judaism and Islam.  The goal is to define what we mean by “religion” in the encounter with the facts of religions. We deal with the three monotheist religions, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. We describe the three religions one by one, by reference to the classical writings of each: Judaism represented by the Hebrew Scriptures a.k.a. the Old Testament as read by the Rabbis of the Mishnah, Talmuds, and Midrash; Christianity represented by the Bible, a.k.a. the Old Testament and the New Testament; Islam represented by the Quran, Sunna, and Hadith. We compare and contrast the three religious systems as portrayed in the classical writings to which all later developments of Judaism, Christianity and Islam refer.  Texts will include Three Faiths, One God. The Formative Faith and Practice of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, with Bruce D. Chilton & William A. Graham;  Comparing Religions Through Law: Judaism and Islam, with Tamara Sonn;  Judaism and Islam in Practice. A Source Book of the Classical Age, with Tamara Sonn & Jonathan Brockopp.
