8 credits The course is an introduction to Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) as it is used in Arab countries today. In the first part, students will be introduced to Arabic script, pronunciation, and essentials of basic Arabic structures, syntax and vocabulary. These are reinforced by reading graded texts. In the second part, students will expand their active and passive lexicon and grammatical structures through various authentic texts. Through both parts of the course the four basic linguistic skills will be dealt with simultaneously. Significant aspects of Arab culture will be highlighted as well as differences between MSA and educated spoken Arabic. Students will work in the language lab, watch movies, TV programs and will have additional two-hour sessions with the Arabic tutor mainly for conversational practice.

This course is a continuation of Intermediate Arabic 201.The course focuses on developing a significant level of linguistic and communicative competence in the language.  The four linguistic skills will be dealt with simultaneously.  Modern literary and expository texts as well as a selection of texts from Arab media will be read to expand active and passive lexicon and grammatical structures.  Differences between Modern Standard Arabic and colloquial Arabic will be highlighted.

This course develops an advanced level in listening, speaking, writing  and  reading skills. Our reading will explore short stories, film, poetry, and critical  essays in Arabic. Important writers and intellectuals in the original include Yusuf Idris, Jabra Ibrahim Jabra, Fuad Al-takarli, Nawal El-saadawi and  Naser Abu-Zaid. Students will be trained to write short compositions and  précis, give oral presentations on a chosen topic, participate and lead class discussions. Our close readings will, when necessary, review forms of grammatical and syntactical accuracy.
