Writing Essays

Professor

Peg Peoples

Schedule

Mon. Weds. 12:00 – 1:20  OLINLC 120

2 credits  This will be an intensive writing course in which we sharpen our skills at composing and revising academic essays.  We will consider the process of developing an essay – from early invention through intensive rewriting – and pay special attention to supporting our claims with textual evidence.  Our focus will be the array of choices available to writers responding to complicated issues with clear, convincing arguments.  We will seek to do so not by simplifying our thinking but, rather, by using the format of the essay – particularly structure – to capture and convey our ideas in all their complexity.  Both short essays and long research papers will be covered, including research methods and note-taking.

This course introduces students to the tools of the military historian and helps students to evaluate critically the past, present and future of Western armies.  Through examining the historical evolution of warfare in Europe and in America from the time of Gustavus Adolphus until the eve of the First World War, we will become familiar not only with some of the most significant historical developments in Western warfare, but also the causes, conduct, and results of selected military conflicts. We will investigate the unique ways that different Western societies have organized themselves for war, and will come to understand how various European and American armies have been recruited, organized, armed, trained, led, and supplied in different times and places.  In time, we will gain confidence in evaluating the decisions of various military and political leaders at the tactical, operational and strategic levels of war, leading us toward a much clearer understanding of today’s soldiers and the policies that send them into battle.
