A year-long introduction to the Latin language. Our goals are: (1) to gain familiarity with morphology, syntax, and essential vocabulary; (2) to achieve sufficient fluency for selected readings in ancient and medieval texts by the middle of the Spring term; and (3) to begin exploring the literary, cultural, and historical contexts in which the language is embedded. No knowledge of Latin required. Participation in this class qualifies students for consideration for Professor Minsky’s Roma In Situ. (January and Spring 2006).

A survey of Roman literature from the period of the late Republic,  focusing on selections from the poetry of Lucretius and Catullus and the prose of Caesar, Sallust and Cicero.  Attention will be paid to consolidating grammatical understanding acquired in the preceding year, expanding vocabulary so that fluency can be reached, and learning to appreciate the different patterns of word  order and rhetoric  characteristic of classical  Latin poery and prose respectively.  Selections will also be made with a view to the drama of the historical background, the descent of Roman republican government towards civil war and one-man rule.  Open to all students who have completed Latin 102 or its equivalent.  Participation in this class qualifies students for consideration for Professor Minsky’s Roma In Situ. (January and Spring 2006).
