A survey of Roman literature from the period of the
late Republic, focusing on selections
from the poetry of Lucretius and Catullus and the prose of Caesar, Sallust and
Cicero. Attention will be paid to consolidating grammatical understanding
acquired in the preceding year, expanding vocabulary so that fluency can be
reached, and learning to appreciate the different patterns of word order and rhetoric characteristic of classical
Latin poery and prose respectively.
Selections will also be made with a view to the drama of the historical
background, the descent of Roman republican government towards civil war and
one-man rule. Open to all students who
have completed Latin 102 or its equivalent.
Participation in this
class qualifies students for consideration for Professor Minsky’s Roma In
Situ. (January and Spring 2006).
