Literary Japanese (bungo) has been the primary medium for writing poetry, fiction, drama, and essays in Japanese from the earliest times up until the end of World War II.  Through an introduction to its linguistic principles and poetics, exercises in how to parse a text, and readings of passages from some of Japan’s most revered literary works, students will gain familiarity with the classical literary language and simultaneously deepen their linguistic and cultural understanding of its modern counterpart.  Materials will include a variety of poetic, narrative, and dramatic genres selected in consultation with the instructor.
