Title

From Tango to Torture: Modern Argentine Literature in a Cultural Context

Professor

Melanie Nicholson

Schedule

Th 1:30 pm - 3:50 pm LC 206

Modern Argentine literature was born in 1872 with José Hernández's Martín Fierro, an epic poem decrying the fencing in of the pampa and the consequent loss of the gaucho lifestyle. From that moment forward, this rich body of literature has closely reflected the conflicts inherent in a nation torn, as Sarmiento observed, "between civilization and barbarism." This course will trace the historical and cultural events that frame Argentina's passage through the twentieth century by examining certain key literary texts, as well as music and film. We will pay special attention to the way these works embody the sometimes profound contradictions of Argentine modernity. We will read prose and poetry by José Hernández, Leopoldo Lugones, Roberto Arlt, Jorge Luis Borges, Jacobo Fijman, Silvina Ocampo, Julio Cortázar, Alejandra Pizarnik, Manuel Puig, María Luisa Valenzuela, Ricardo Piglia, Juan Gelman, Alicia Partnoy, and Juan José Saer. Conducted in Spanish.
