An introduction to Classical Latin, the language of Virgil, Catullus, Cicero, Tacitus, Livy, and, with some modifications, of much of Western literature through medieval times and the Renaissance. In this course, students with no previous knowledge of the language learn the grammar and syntax, and acquire a working vocabulary, of Latin. There will be frequent quizzes and drills, a mid-term and a final. The book will be supplemented by materials provided by the instructor. In Latin 102, the continuation of this course in the spring, students will be reading (and reciting) poems of Catullus and other short texts. Students with some knowledge of Latin, for example High School Latin, should see the instructor or Prof. Callanan about placement. This course forms an indivisible sequence with Latin 102 in the spring.
