Interarts Collaboration: Creating Across Boundaries

Professor

Leslie Satin

Schedule

Fr 12:30 pm - 2:50 pm Avery Arts Cntr.

Contemporary practitioners of art and performance regularly edge their work past conventional definitions. At the same time, artists come together to make pieces whose resonance extends beyond their individual components. In this workshop, students will create work that moves across definitions and genres or that calls for joint creative participation, for background and inspiration focussing on two models of 1960's New York City: Fluxus and the Judson Dance Theater. We will read historical and critical texts about their work; develop studio activities as well as individual and collective projects derived from their philosophies and practices; and formulate work based on Scores, as articulated by urban planner Lawrence Halprin and choreographer Anna Halprin. We will encourage students to deepen their connections to familiar modes of work and to try their hands at new forms. Readings include essays by Kristine Stiles (from the exhibition catalogue In the Spirit of Fluxus); excerpts from Lawrence Halprin's The RSVP Cycles and Anna Halprin's Moving Towards Life; and essays by Sally Banes, Carolyn Brown, John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Deborah Jowitt, Kenneth King, Yvonne Rainer, and Carolee Schneeman. Open to Integrated Arts Students and other moderated students of the arts.

Anatomy for the Performer

Professor

Kriota Willberg

Schedule

Th 1:00 pm -3:00 pm

The course focuses on primary bones, joints, ligaments, and muscles relevant to dancing, the physiology of breathing, and the body as a complex physical system to understand better how to prevent injuries and how to develop a full range of expression with safety and pleasure. The course also includes kinetic awareness techniques that bridge the gap between intellectual understanding of anatomical information and actual experience of the body in movement and so help relieve chronic tension, gain flexibility, and deepen the body-mind connection. Students have the opportunity to work in depth on chronic body problems. Weekly assignments are given. The course is open to students in Dance, Theater or Performance. Enrollment is limited to sixteen students.

PERFORMANCE CLASSES

Intensive technique studies are essential to a serious dance student's training. Intending and current dance majors must register for four credits of dance technique each semester of their four years at Bard. Students are welcome to watch classes currently being offered to learn about the different modern dance styles/methods of teaching and the ballet for modern dancers.

DAN 103- Introduction to Dance

One credit each. Classes in modern dance and ballet intended for the beginner; no previous dance experience necessary. Open to all students. In the fall, two classes may be taken for 2 credits which are indivisible: both sections must be passed in order to receive credit. First-year students with previous dance experience should speak with the dance professors before registration.

DAN 217 & DAN 317 - Dance Composition

DAN WKSH. - Dance Workshop

Dance Composition and Dance Workshop in Performance and Production are required of all dance majors; before Moderation students enroll in both sections of 217 and Dance Workshop for four credits; Juniors and Seniors enroll in 317 and Dance Workshop. Open to non-majors with proven experience, inclination, and permission of the instructor. All students of Dance Composition must attend Dance Workshop in Performance and Production. The Dance Program aims to prepare students, in as versatile a way as possible, to understand and practice the art of dance and performance. To this end, the Program presents four productions that are open to the Bard community and the public. Moderation and Senior Project work is prepared for and performed in these four productions. Dance Workshop in Performance and Production creates and sustains our community of performers and collaborators, on stage and behind the scenes. Members of the community are welcome to join the workshop, and may receive one credit by registering in a tutorial with Jean Churchill.

World Music and Dance

Professor

Bill Vanaver

Schedule

Fr 9:30 am - 12:30 pm

2 credits In the past few years, due in part to the dissemination and popularity of the likes of Ladysmith Black Mombazo, Riverdance, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Paco De Lucia, and Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares, it has become evident in the public eye that the tremendous wealth and variety of world music and dance forms is truly staggering. Now, more than ever, a familiarity with the structures and styles of ethnic music and dance is essential for a well rounded attitude towards, and understanding of, performance forms in general. Since exposure as passive spectator can offer only partial impressions of these subtle styles, students will be given opportunities to participate physically in various world music and dance forms through movement, vocalization, drumming, and creative work. Music and dance of the Balkans, Central Asians, Native Americans, Irish, North Africans, Andeans and others will be highlighted in the course. Functional modalities, (i.e. religious celebrations, entertainment, status, courtship, work songs, chanteys, lullabies, etc.) will be investigated. Guest performers of various ethnic styles will participate. Students will be encouraged to use their own skills and bring in musical instruments, and will be expected to do independent projects in folklore, as well as creative work in collaboration with others.
