The course is an introduction to Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) as it is used in Arab countries today. It presents Arabic script and pronunciation, and essentials of basic Arabic structures, syntax and vocabulary. All these are reinforced by reading graded texts. Differences between MSA and educated spoken Arabic as well as significant aspects of Arab culture will be highlighted. Open to students with no previous knowledge in Arabic and to others in consultation with the instructor.

Introduction to Arabic Media

The course is an introduction to Arabic media. It will focus on Arabic TV and radio programs as well as reading newspapers and magazines published in Arab countries today. Students will become familiar with a variety of nuances of reporting and styles (including linguistic styles) of titles and contents that are used in these sources. Students will develop a good sense of how ideas and facts are communicated while expanding their active and passive lexicon. The four basic language skills - reading, speaking, listening, and writing, - will be dealt with simultaneously. During the course students will also be taught to access Arabic newspapers and journals through the internet. The course will be conducted mainly in Arabic.
