PHOT 108 Visual Language

Thursday 1:30 - 4:30 Woods Studio

CRN: 94747

This course is for beginning students who have a command of darkroom techniques but need to develop their practice of photography as a means of self-expression. Through weekly criticism of individual work, the students will refine their understanding of the visual language of photography and expand their use of the camera as an expressive tool. The students must obtain within the first week of classes a 35mm camera with fully adjustable f/stops and shutter speeds. There will be no darkroom instruction or access. All students' works will done with color slides. Admission is by portfolio.

New Course in FILM

Jennifer Reeves will teach a new course in FILM open to junior and senior film and theater majors

FILM 378 Exquisite Corpse Film Workshop

Who's to say "too many chefs spoil the meal?" As this class functions as a rotating production team, the talent, imagination, and industry of each student will mesh and collide to create an original and surprising 16mm film. A narrative structure and aesthetic will be styled by the class to focus creative efforts and each student will have an opportunity to write, direct,, and edit a scene, acting as crew or cast in other scenes. Under fairly atypical production conditions, students will apply technical knowledge acquired in class demos and exercises to the film. Issues of art direction, narrative continuity, and collaboration will be tackled as students solve the technical and aesthetic issues brought forth by the class production. Though the final product may be sensational, the primary goal of the class is for students to develop their technical and story-telling proficiency through working in a variety of roles of a film production. Prerequisite: film and theater students, by permission of the instructor.
